What Happens in the Nervous System During Burnout
When we experience prolonged stress, the nervous system shifts into a protective state designed to help us cope with pressure and uncertainty.

This response is often called survival mode.

In survival mode, the body focuses on getting through challenges rather than restoring balance and energy.
For short periods of time, this response is helpful.

But, when stress continues for weeks or months, the nervous system may struggle to return to a calm and regulated state.

As a result, people experiencing burnout may feel:

• deeply exhausted even after resting

• mentally foggy or emotionally drained

• overwhelmed by things that once felt manageable

This doesn’t mean the body is broken.
It simply means the nervous system may still be operating from a protective response.

Understanding this process can be the first step toward helping the body gradually move back toward stability and recovery.
